Convicted in Zia murder case, Major Mozzaffar was in hiding in the country for 28 years
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) has said that fugitive convict Major (retd.) Mozzaffar Hossain, sentenced to death for the murder of former President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, was in hiding in the country for nearly 28 years.

DB sources claim that after evading law enforcement agencies for a long time by staying in various districts, he had been living with his family in the capital's Banani DOHS area for the past few years. He was arrested on Wednesday (July 16) night. He is currently in army custody.

Citing information obtained during interrogation, the DB said that Mozzaffar fled to India the day after the murder of Ziaur Rahman on May 30, 1981. There, he lived under a false identity, obtained citizenship, and later made a passport in that identity. Investigation-related sources also claim that he tried to conceal his whereabouts by traveling to various countries.

According to DB information, he secretly returned to Bangladesh in 1998 and since then lived in various parts of the country hiding his identity. Recently, he was living with his wife, one son, and one daughter in his father-in-law's flat in Banani DOHS in the capital.

Investigating officers believe that his arrest may yield new information about some long-standing unresolved issues related to the Ziaur Rahman murder case.

Meanwhile, journalist Anthony Mascarenhas' book Bangladesh: A Legacy of Blood claims that after the murder, Major Mozzaffar and several other army officers went to the Chittagong Circuit House to remove the bodies of the deceased and participated in a subsequent military meeting. However, these descriptions are part of the book's author's account and historical sources; independent verification of this matter was not possible.
