The protest programme was held on Saturday (7 November) in front of the Chattogram Press Club. People from various professions joined the journalists.
Speakers at the programme said the main duty of journalists is to present true and objective information to the people. If journalists face obstacles in freely collecting and publishing news, ordinary people will also be deprived of accurate information. Mistreating a journalist is not just a personal insult; it is an attack on media freedom and the people's right to know.
They also said that having celebrity status does not place anyone above the law, and such behaviour towards a media worker is not acceptable in any way. The speakers condemned Pori Moni's conduct, called for her boycott, and demanded that the authorities concerned take necessary action. Participants later protested by throwing shoes at Pori Moni's photo.
Notably, on 5 November, after receiving bail in a case, an unpleasant incident occurred at the Dhaka court premises with Rabiul Hossain Raju, a multimedia journalist of Dainik Samakal. Pori Moni had appeared in court that day with 10 personal bodyguards; after the hearing, the court granted her bail on a Tk 500 bond.
As she was getting into her car after the court proceedings, Pori Moni alleged that someone in the crowd had touched her inappropriately. She is alleged to have then turned on journalist Raju. Video footage of the incident shows that journalist Raju was collecting news from a distance; at that time, one of Pori Moni's bodyguards pushed him. Pori Moni allegedly then snatched Raju's mobile phone and abused him in foul language. The phone was later returned.
