Government is taking a long-term plan to increase natural production of indigenous fish
The government has undertaken a long-term plan to increase the natural production of indigenous fish and protect breeding grounds. As part of this, fish sanctuaries are being created in haors, baors, rivers and canals as well as in the sea. Minister of Fisheries and Livestock and Minister of Agriculture Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said work is moving forward with a large budget in this sector from this year under the directive of Prime Minister Tarek Rahman.

The minister said these things in his speech as chief guest at a workshop organized by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC). He said that although self-sufficiency has been achieved in farmed fish, natural breeding grounds are under threat due to climate change and unawareness. To overcome this crisis, he directed scientists to intensify research on developing indigenous fish breeds, restoring endangered species, and safe fish production. The minister also mentioned the target of exporting sufficient fish abroad while maintaining quality.

Speaking as special guest at the workshop, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said fish production and taste depend on water quality. Therefore, a suitable environment for fish growth must be ensured by preventing pollution and excavating rivers and canals. The event was presided over by Director General of BFRI Dr. Md. Latiful Islam, and senior officials and researchers from various departments, including Secretary of Fisheries and Livestock Md. Delowar Hossain, were present.
