Government is building sanctuaries for freshwater fish: Agriculture and Fisheries Minister
Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said the government has taken an initiative to establish 'freshwater fish sanctuaries' in haors, beels, rivers and water bodies to increase breeding and production of indigenous freshwater fish. In these sanctuaries, large pits and canals will be dug and reserved for mother fish, and fishing will be prohibited by appointing guards.

He said these things after visiting Achmita George Institute Stadium in Katiyadi on Saturday noon. The visit was held ahead of the Prime Minister's Kishoreganj visit on August 16.

The minister said the natural production of indigenous fish has decreased a lot compared to before, because the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and the destruction of mother fish breeding grounds have almost wiped out their sanctuaries. As a result, many freshwater fish are now on the verge of extinction. To tackle this situation, large pits and canals will be dug in haors and wetlands under government initiative to ensure safe refuge for mother fish. There will be security arrangements so that no one can catch fish from the sanctuaries.

He said, 'If safe refuge is ensured for mother fish, breeding will increase, the number of eggs will increase, and gradually fish production will also increase.' This program has been named 'Freshwater Fish Sanctuary'. Its implementation will begin from the next season, and the plan has already been finalized and the budget set.

At this time, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md. Shariful Alam, Members of Parliament from Kishoreganj-1 and -2 constituencies Md. Mazharul Islam and Md. Jalal Uddin, Deputy Commissioner Sohana Nasrin, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Upazila Executive Officer Shamima Afroz Marlis, District Council Administrator VP Khaled Saifullah Sohel and local BNP leaders were present.

Those concerned believe that if this government initiative is implemented, the production of indigenous fish in haor areas will increase and it will also play an important role in conserving endangered species.
