Md. Sahabuddin leaves Bangabhaban today, going abroad for treatment
After resigning from the presidency, former President Md. Sahabuddin is leaving Bangabhaban today, Sunday (July 26). He will then move to his own residence in Gulshan, Dhaka with his family. He has also informed about his plan to go abroad soon for better treatment of his physical condition.

In an interview with a media outlet, the former President said he could go to Singapore or Bangkok for treatment. The Combined Military Hospital (CMH) has advised him to undergo advanced treatment abroad. He said that since his wife Rebeka Sultana is also ill, he also intends to take her abroad.

Citing health reasons, Md. Sahabuddin resigned from the presidency last Friday. In his resignation letter, he mentioned that he had been suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney-related complications for a long time. Recently, after bypass surgery, he was diagnosed with ‘autonomic neuropathy’, due to which he occasionally loses consciousness for short periods.

As part of the preparations for leaving Bangabhaban, his personal belongings were being transferred to his Gulshan residence for the past few days. The necessary renovation and cleaning of the house have also been completed.

Md. Sahabuddin took oath as the 22nd President of the country on April 24, 2023. After his resignation, according to the constitution, Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is serving as acting President until a new President is elected.

New presidential election within 90 days

According to the constitution, a new presidential election will be held within 90 days of the presidency falling vacant. The Election Commission has said it will announce the schedule for this election soon.

Meanwhile, although discussions have begun in the political arena about who will be the new President, BNP leaders have said that the party's highest policy-making forum will decide on this matter. The process of electing the next President will be completed in accordance with the constitution and law.

Speaker to serve as acting President

Although taking over as acting President, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will not reside in Bangabhaban. He will stay at the Speaker's official residence. However, he will carry out the official duties of the President from Bangabhaban.

Since taking over the President's responsibilities, special security measures have been strengthened in and around the Speaker's official residence at the National Parliament premises to ensure his security.
