Sagar-Runi murder case investigation report delayed again, new date August 27
The date for submitting the investigation report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has been postponed again. This marks the 128th time the submission of the investigation report in the case has been extended.

On Wednesday, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam set a new date of August 27 for submitting the investigation report.

Although the day was scheduled for submitting the investigation report in the case, Additional Superintendent of Police of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and investigating officer Md. Azizul Haq could not submit the report. However, he appeared in court in person and explained the progress of the investigation. Later, the court set a new date.

The accused in the case are Rafiqul Islam, Bokul Mia, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Islam alias Arun, Abu Said, two security guards of Sagar-Runi's residence Palash Rudra Pal and Enayet Ahmed, and their acquaintance Tanvir Rahman Khan. Among them, Tanvir Rahman Khan is on bail, and Palash Rudra Pal is absconding after being released on bail. The other accused are in jail.

On February 11, 2012, Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed at their home in West Rajabazar in the capital. Runi's brother, Nawshad Alam Roman, filed a murder case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over the incident.

Initially, a sub-inspector (SI) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station investigated the case, but after four days, the investigation was handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB). Later, due to failure to solve the mystery, the investigation was transferred to RAB on April 18 of the same year by order of the High Court.

Subsequently, on September 30, 2024, the High Court ordered the formation of a high-powered task force comprising experienced officers from various agencies to investigate the case and directed that the investigation report be submitted within six months.

Following the court's order, on October 17, 2024, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification forming a four-member high-level task force with the PBI chief as convener. Currently, the investigation activities of the case are ongoing under the supervision of that task force.
