The severe gas shortage across the country following the fire incident at the LNG terminal in Maheshkhali has once again exposed the vulnerabilities of Bangladesh’s energy security. The disruption in gas supplies is affecting electricity generation, industrial production, CNG stations and household cooking. In many places, people are having to wait for hours at CNG filling stations, while in many households, cooking stoves remain unusable due to the lack of gas. Industrial production has also been disrupted, with businesses increasingly turning to alternative fuels at higher costs. What we are witnessing is a clear example of how a single technical accident can affect almost every aspect of public life and the economy.
