The accident occurred on Thursday (July 16) around 7:30 am in the Sroadangi Koroitola area under Ataikula Police Station on the Pabna-Dhaka highway.
The deceased are Bulu Khatun (55), from Mahmudpur village in Santhia Upazila, and the ambulance driver Raj Hossain (35), from North Shalgariya area of Pabna municipality.
Madhupur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman said an ambulance was returning from Rajshahi to Pabna carrying the body of a child who died of kidney disease. At the same time, a passenger bus named 'Pabna Express' heading from Dhaka to Pabna reached the Sroadangi Koroitola area, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles.
In the accident, ambulance driver Raj Hossain and the child's grandmother Bulu Khatun died on the spot. Several others in the ambulance were injured.
Upon receiving the news, highway police arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies of the deceased, and sent the injured to Pabna General Hospital. The accident-hit bus and ambulance have been seized and taken into police custody. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
