Sarwar Alamgir's candidacy upheld, no more obstacles to taking oath as MP
The Appellate Division has upheld the candidacy of BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir, who won the Chattogram-2 constituency in the thirteenth national parliamentary election. As a result, concerned lawyers say there is no longer any legal obstacle to his taking oath as a member of parliament.

The Appellate Division announced this verdict around 11:30 am on Thursday.

Earlier, on January 18 of this year, after a hearing, the Election Commission decided to cancel Sarwar Alamgir's candidacy. Challenging the validity of that decision, he filed a writ petition in the High Court.

Subsequently, on January 27, the High Court stayed the Election Commission's order and issued a rule allowing him to participate in the election.

Against that High Court order, the rival candidate Nurul Amin filed a leave to appeal in the Appellate Division. On February 3, the Appellate Division granted the leave to appeal.

As a result, although Sarwar Alamgir was allowed to participate in the election, it was ordered that the election result be kept suspended until the appeal was disposed of.

With the final verdict of the Appellate Division on Thursday upholding his candidacy, the legal barrier to taking oath as a member of parliament has been removed.
