One by one, small faces, many of whom have not yet learned to call ‘mother’ properly, have not even been able to see the colors of the world well—their lives are being stopped in the midst of fever, cough, red spots, and shortness of breath. The death toll is no longer just a number. 100, 200, 300—counting like this, 499. One day, it will reach 500. And then, maybe somewhere in a hospital bed, or in a mud house in a village, a mother or father will put their hand on their child’s forehead and tremble.

But the child will not open their eyes.
