Before her arrest, Jana had memorised about 20 paras of the Holy Quran. While in prison, she memorised the remaining portion and became a hafiz of the complete Quran. Recently, during her court hearing, she informed those present that she had recited the entire Quran from memory in one sitting.

Jana did not stop at completing her own memorisation. She is also teaching the Quran and Hadith to other women prisoners in the jail. Through her initiative, an environment of religious education and study has developed inside the prison.

However, prison life is not at all easy for her. Palestinian women held in Damon Prison face food shortages, harsh prison conditions and various restrictions. The prisoner-affairs organisation said Jana was also subjected to humiliating searches during her arrest and while being transferred from one prison to another.
