Prime Minister mourns death of Jamir Uddin Sarkar

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of former Speaker of the National Assembly and BNP National Standing Committee member Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, the Prime Minister prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and expressed deep condolences to the members of the bereaved family.

In the condolence message, the Prime Minister said that Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar was a wise, experienced, honest and dedicated personality in Bangladesh politics. Throughout his long political career, he served as Acting President and Speaker of the National Assembly with honesty, wisdom and a sense of responsibility. Besides, he efficiently performed various important state responsibilities including Minister of Education, Deputy Minister of Land, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Deputy Minister of Public Works and Urban Development.

He said the nation will remember with deep respect the contribution of Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar in consolidating democratic institutions, developing parliamentary culture, and running a welfare-oriented state.

The Prime Minister further said that Jamir Uddin Sarkar was unwavering throughout his life in the ideals of Bangladeshi nationalism, democracy and establishing people's rights. Despite long political struggles, repression and adversity, he did not deviate from the party's ideals and firmly upheld the nationalist ideology.

Referring to his role in the anti-autocracy movement and struggle of the last 17 years, the Prime Minister said that his contribution to the movement for re-establishing democracy, voting rights and fundamental human rights will be remembered not only in the history of BNP but will also remain an important chapter in the country's democratic journey.

At the end of the condolence message, the Prime Minister said that the country has lost an experienced politician, skilled parliamentary figure, prudent statesman and patriot in the death of Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar. His ideals, honesty and eventful life will remain a source of inspiration for future generations of politicians.

The Prime Minister prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and sought from Almighty Allah his place in Jannatul Ferdous. At the same time, he expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues and well-wishers.
