How Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar became involved in BNP politics

His long journey in Bangladesh politics began during his student life. His political career started in 1945 through the Student Federation. Later, he became involved with the Student Union and the National Awami Party (NAP).

After independence, when President Ziaur Rahman established the Jatiyatabadi Ganatantrik Dal (Jagodal) in the initial phase of forming a political party, Jamir Uddin Sircar joined that party. He was a member of the Working Committee of Jagodal. Later, when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was formed, he served as a member of its Standing Committee, holding important responsibilities.

Due to his reputation as a lawyer, President Ziaur Rahman appointed him as Bangladesh's representative to the United Nations General Assembly five times between 1977 and 1981.

Minister and Acting President responsibilities

In Ziaur Rahman's cabinet, he served as Deputy Minister for Public Works and Urban Development in 1981. Later, he also served as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in the government of President Abdus Sattar.

After the BNP formed the government in 1991, he served as Deputy Minister for Land, Minister for Education, and later Minister for Science and Technology. In 1996, he also served as Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in the short-lived BNP government. He played a significant role in formulating the caretaker government system at that time.

After the resignation of President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury in 2002, he served as Acting President from June 21 to September 6 until a new President was elected.

Speaker and Member of Parliament

Jamir Uddin Sircar served as the Speaker of the Eighth National Parliament from 2001 to 2009.

He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1979 from the then Dinajpur-1 constituency. Subsequently, he was elected as a Member of Parliament multiple times, including from Dhaka-9, Panchagarh-1, and the Bogura-6 by-election in 2009.

Education and Personal Life

Jamir Uddin Sircar was born on December 1, 1931, in the Nayabari village of Tetulia Upazila in Panchagarh district. After completing his MA and LLB from the University of Dhaka, he went to the United Kingdom in 1961 and obtained a Barrister-at-Law degree from Lincoln's Inn in London.

Returning to the country, he established himself as a renowned lawyer in the Bangladesh Supreme Court in constitutional, civil, and criminal law.

In his personal life, he leaves behind his wife Noor Akhtar, one daughter Nilufar Jamir, and two sons Naushad Jamir and Nowfel Jamir. His son, Barrister Naushad Jamir, is also actively involved in BNP politics.
