Mafia rule and extortion on roads must end: Rizvi

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists after placing floral wreaths at the graves of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Thursday (October 8) morning. Leaders of the new committee of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation were present at the time.

Rizvi said immediate effective measures are needed to remove the so-called mafia-based control that has grown around the road transport sector. He expressed hope that the new leadership will play a role in ending the long-standing stalemate in the transport sector.

Emphasizing the protection of the interests of ordinary workers and improving the quality of passenger service, he said the road transport sector will be reshaped through new ideas and modern management. He also said that, along with removing the long-standing disorder and making the sector lawful, a new example will be set in passenger service.

Criticizing the anarchy of the past 17 years, Rizvi said that if politicians play a responsible role in preventing political chaos, it will be possible to bring a permanent end to such situations.

At the time, leaders of the organization, including President of the National Road Transport Workers Organization Nazim Uddin Alam, Executive President Mortazul Karim Badru and General Secretary Rezaul Islam Raju, were present.
