Re-excavation begins to revive Dhanmondi Lake

About 162,534 cubic meters of sludge accumulated in the 3.10-kilometer-long and average 56-meter-wide lake will be removed. Two floating excavators and four barges will be used to remove about 700 cubic meters of sludge daily. The initial cost of this nearly one-year-long work has been estimated at Tk 26 crore.

Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said the overall development and management of Dhanmondi Lake was his election pledge. Sludge removal has started as the first phase of two projects. According to the detailed design, the entire lake will be renovated later.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam said that after cleaning the lakebed, work will be done on water purification, side wall renovation, walkway modernization and expansion, beautification, and lighting. Besides, there are plans to develop roads, footpaths, and infrastructure in the entire area.

According to DSCC's master plan, a total of Tk 75 crore will be spent on the development of Dhanmondi Lake. Of this, Tk 50 crore will be spent on renovating the lake and infrastructure, and Tk 25 crore on constructing ‘Nazrul Sarobar’. It will have various facilities including an amphitheater, library, book corner, urban forest, plaza, lake ghat, restaurant, and cafes.

In addition, floating decks, kiosks, a modern gym, cafeteria, badminton court, open-air gymnasium, parking, CCTV, and security arrangements will be developed at the lake. After the lakebed is freed of sludge, there are plans to implement the main renovation and construction of ‘Nazrul Sarobar’ simultaneously.
