Padma River water near danger level, thousands of people marooned

According to the district Water Development Board, the water level of the Padma at Pankha gauge station is 21.76 meters. The river's danger level is 22.5 meters. Alongside, the water of the Mahananda and Punarbhaba rivers is also rising. In Mahananda, at Khalghat gauge station, water is flowing at 19.43 meters, and in Punarbhaba, at Rohanpur gauge station, at 19.46 meters.

Sub-divisional engineer of Chapainawabganj Water Development Board Md. Rakibul Islam said, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the Padma's water may rise until Saturday. After that, there is a possibility of water decreasing. As the water is currently below danger level, there is no fear of major flooding.

Meanwhile, due to rising water, people in various char areas of Narayanpur Union of Sadar Upazila have become marooned. On Thursday, Assistant Commissioner of the Upazila Land Office Ikramul Hossain and officials from various departments of the administration visited these areas.

During the visit, local residents informed the officials about being marooned, travel difficulties, problems in agricultural work, and other crises. Officials of the upazila administration listened to their problems and assured necessary assistance.

Locals said that if the Padma water rises further, the suffering of the people in char areas may increase further. In particular, they fear that the crisis in communication and agricultural work will become more severe.
