Abdus Shahid did not compromise on democracy and media freedom

Speakers said these things at a memorial meeting organized on the occasion of the sixth death anniversary of Abdus Shahid at the National Press Club on Monday (August 24).

BFUJ General Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury said, Abdus Shahid was an honest, courageous and principled journalist. He was vocal throughout his life against injustice and irregularities. He was also uncompromising on the question of the country's independence and sovereignty.

Journalist leaders said that Abdus Shahid had to face situations like imprisonment and losing job due to revealing the truth. Even then, he did not refrain from speaking about freedom of expression and rights of journalists.

The speakers also said that his honesty, courage and uncompromising journalistic ideals will remain an inspiration for the young generation of journalists. At the memorial meeting, prayers were offered seeking forgiveness for the departed souls of late Abdus Shahid and veteran photojournalist Khaled Haider.
